Counter-Strike 2 is coming this summer!

Today we finally got confirmation after a long wait that Counter-Strike 2 is coming this summer. It will be based on the Source 2 engine and will be a free upgrade to CSGO. The first players will be able to test this update later today. These players are chosen based on the following criteria:

Players are selected based on a number of factors deemed important by the Counter-Strike 2 development team, including (but not limited to) recent playtime on Valve official servers, trust factor, and Steam account standing.

Subtick system

In most games, the game engine updates the position of objects at a fixed rate, typically 60 times per second (60Hz bit often refered to as "ticks"). This means that every object in the game, including the player character, enemies, and environmental objects, is updated 60 times per second.

However, there are some games, especially those that require very precise movement, that use subtick rates. This will be the case in Counter-Strike 2 as well. Subtick rates allow for more frequent updates to the position and movement of objects in the game, which can lead to smoother and more responsive gameplay.

For example, a game with a subtick rate of 120Hz would update the position and movement of objects twice as often as a game with a 60Hz update rate. This can be especially important in fast-paced games where precise movement and timing are crucial, such as first-person shooters or fighting games.

Responsive smokes

The new game will include responsive smokes which bring some interesting new features to smokes in Counter-Strike.

  • One-way smokes are not possible anymore, everyone sees the same smoke
  • Different colours for smokes (slightly blue for CT & slightly yellow for T)
  • Lightning affects the look of the smokes
  • Smokes fill up spaces and are adapting to the environment
  • Shoot the smoke or drop a grenade to make a visible gap in it

Updated maps

The following maps are already known to be available in Counter-Strike 2 this summer. First only Dust 2 will be part of the very first play test coming out today.

  • Dust 2
  • Ancient
  • Overpass
  • Nuke
  • Italy
  • Inferno

I am beyond excited for this update. According to fl0m, a creator that was invited to the first in office play test, the game will still feel like CSGO & quoted a developer "we want it to feel exactly like CSGO".

Other confirmed additions

  • Silencer unscrew bind
  • Jump-throws will be consistent without a bind
  • Lineups for 128 tick smokes work in Counter-Strike 2
  • Bullet trackers are visible
  • Bunny hopping will be possible
